Elijah Wanga, a name that deserves a spot among the greats of missionary work in our land. A man of relentless dedication to the calling of God. Elijah is no ordinary missionary. His life is a testament to a simple yet profound truth that makes him stand out from the millions of Christians. Here is a statement he said that captivated the audience during our SNF Spontaneous Night “For 50 years, I have never worked for money.”
Hebrews 11:6 (NIV) – “And without faith, it is impossible to please God because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”
Evangelist Elijah was commissioned by Every Home for Christ ministry, and he has been faithfully serving there for more than twenty years… He embarked on a journey 16 years ago that led him to every village of Upolu and Savaii, the main islands of Samoa. While many of us Christians enjoy the comforts of our churches, networks, and social get-togethers, this man had a challenging assignment, which was to visit Every Home in Samoa for Christ and to preach the gospel as mentioned in Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 16:15-20. As a result… he faced the sun’s scorching heat, treading through villages and lands, mountains and valleys leaving an impact on every life he had ministered and prayed over.
When families and friends tried to influence him to get a job to provide for his family, Elijah had a different conviction. His heart was steadfast on the belief that working for God would mean, that God shall supply all of his needs according to His riches and Glory in Christ.
Philippians 4:19 (NIV) – “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”
This truth embodies his daily life and his calling as a missionary and it should encourage us who are in the body of Christ to never let our lack of resources and finances stop us from stepping out in faith to obey and fulfill the calling of God.
Psalm 91:11-12 (NIV) – “For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.”
During our Spontaneous Night, Elijah unfolded a narrative about God’s faithfulness. His testimony spoke of The Lord’s endless provisions—from the wedding costs to building his home, children’s school fees, and to his kingdom exploits. What shook our young people were the miraculous supernatural stories he experienced while preaching the Gospel of Christ in the remote places of PNG. He shared about how the hand of God protected him from high-powered M16 bullets that were supernaturally diverted from hitting him directly. Not to mention, his level of faith to trust that God would divinely protect him as he swam across a river filled with hungry crocodiles. Each story painted a picture of God’s personal involvement and his ability to protect and provide for those whom he has called into ministry. Elijah’s unwavering trust in the invisible God speaks volumes to our generation – not to rely so much on our own strength or on the worldly system but trusting God fully.
Galatians 6:7-9 (NIV) – “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
A pattern that we learned from his testimonies, whenever Elijah had a need, he sowed into the kingdom, even if it meant withdrawing every tala he had. From time and time again, God honors His Word and The Lord honors his servant’s obedience…. God would miraculously provide for him. Whether it be providing funds for the building extension or supplying his airfare tickets. God is faithful!
Isaiah 55:8-9 (NIV) – “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
If you desire God’s provision in your life, consider the biblical principle of sowing and reaping. Take Elijah as an example; he grasped this principle, and his life stands as a testimony of the miraculous hand of God. Remember, God’s ways are beyond our understanding, His thoughts transcend ours. I mean, come on! Fifty years without employment under any government institution or business, relying solely on God for provision—that’s living by faith, just as the Bible says: “the just shall live by it.”
Romans 1:17 (NIV) – “For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: ‘The righteous will live by faith.'”
I would like to take this time to honor this missionary who is sold out for Christ, he cannot be bought by money, and he cannot be bribed or controlled by special interest groups – his heart is for the expansion of God’s kingdom and that is what I love and respect. He is a living reality of a Bible-believing, spirit-filled Evangelist who trusts God for all his needs and wants.
1 Samuel 2:30 – for those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed.
It is my prayer that God will bring more evangelists to Samoa who are dedicated wholeheartedly to the advancement of God’s kingdom.
Fa’afetai tele lava Elijah! Thank you for your obedience to the Great Commission! Let us young people observe and be blessed by your devotion to wholeheartedly follow the calling even when it was tough and unbearable!
